Bottled Water- An Industry Update (continued)

Safety issues addressed

IBWA continues to defend the safety of all bottled water containers.  The FDA has determined that all plastics used for bottled water containers (PET, HDPE, polycarbonate) are safe and reliable for food contact use.  Bisphenol-A (BPA) has received a lot of scrutiny in the past several years, and with more than 70 bills on or related to BPA in 25 states in 2013, it remains a very important issue for the home and office delivery (HOD) segment of the bottled water industry.  Regulatory agencies in several countries and the FDA have ruled favorable on the safety of BPA.  The consensus among these international regulatory agencies is that the current levels of exposure to BPA through food packaging does not pose a health risk.  On June 4, the FDA clearly confirmed the safety of BPA, stating that, "based on FDA's ongoing safety review of scientific evidence, the available information continues to support the safety of BPA for the currently approved uses in food container and packaging."
