Fulfilling the potential of bottled water

As population levels increase and cities, in particular, become more populated, access to affordable water has become a more significant issue.

With the global consumption of water continuing to grow substantially, so too does the market for bottled water. Sales of bottled water increased by 28 percent from 2007 to 2012, with still water accounting for 86 percent and sparkling water making up 14 percent of the category.  Polyethylyne terephthalate (PET) was used for packgaging in 85 percent of all bottled water sold in 2012 and now is the packaging material of choice in the category.

The bottled water market is highly competitive - it is a volume-driven sector but one that remains fragmented.  Within this market, a limited number of key global players produce a multitude of brands.  Sales in Western Europe and North America have reached a plateau, whearas in developing countries like Latin American, the Middle Ease and the Asia Pacific region, the market continues to grow significantly.
