An Interview with Ricardo Larrazabal, of Sabin Rose Bottling Company, Inc.-Philippines

“The service and support from Norland has just been excellent. Exemplary, in fact. We have no problems whatsoever with getting any answers we need from Norland any time we need them”, reported Ricardo Larrazabal when asked about his bottled water business. Ricardo visited Norland for a second time and purchased additional equipment for his bottling operation. Ricardo and his family own and operate Sabin Rose Bottling Company in the Philippines.

An Interview with Ricardo Larrazabal, of  Sabin Rose Bottling Company, Inc.-Philippines

1. Would you please tell us a little about yourself-family, friends, where you grew up, and hobbies, etc?

A: I grew up on a farm in Ormoc City, Philippines. My family farmed sugar cane and pineapple. Our property has a natural artesian well on it and it has been flowing with delicious tasting, natural water since 1965. My father first noticed it and wondered, “What are we going to do with all this water”? The idea for a first-class bottled water operation was born!

2. How many years have you been in the water bottling business and how did you decide to get into this business?

A: This will be our second year of bottling the spring water. My father decided to get into the bottled water business and capitalize on the artesian water. He is 86 years old now. He had a well put in that is 365 feet deep with a 6” casing. Our market for our bottled water is the island of Leyte. We are based in Ormoc City, which has always been known for it clean and sweet water. We are already meeting our target business projections and expect to exceed last year’s sales.

3. How did you find out about Norland International and how did you decide to go with Norland’s equipment?

A: We found out by accident, actually. Someone in the Philippines told us they had a filler and rinser part of a bottling system for sale that was top of the line quality. We looked at it and found that the equipment was from Norland International. We were advised by people working for one of the big bottlers in the Philippines that Norland’s equipment is really good plus it is simple and not complicated. So my brother contacted Norland and investigated. We found that we really liked the quality, the people, and the service and support capabilities available from Norland. We have been really satisfied with Norland ever since.

4. Norland’s equipment is made with the operators in mind. How did you find the learning curve for you and your employees?

A: The equipment is made in a way that you only have to learn once and that’s it. It not complicated and is definitely made with users in mind. We are very pleased with how easy it was to learn and operate the system.

5. You are using a Norland SpectraPak™ 3000 in your operations. How has the system been operating for you and what bottle sizes are produced? What volumes?

A: Everything is operating just fine. We had some minor glitches when we were just starting up, like a belt that broke, but nothing big and it has been working extremely well for us. We bottle 500 ml and 5 gallon bottles now. We will expand our operations to include 350 ml and 1 Liter bottles very soon. We produce our own 500 ml bottles on site.

6. How has the “after the sale” service that Norland has provided you with been? Do you get answers to your questions in a timely fashion?

A: The service and support from Norland has just been excellent. Exemplary, in fact. We have no problems whatsoever with getting any answers we need from Norland any time we need them.

7. What advice do you have for others considering the business?

A: Do your research on everything about the business. You will be very happy with Norland International.

8. Chris McCormack is your personal contact with Norland. How has your experience been thus far with Chris?

A: Chris has been exemplary. He is exactly what I expect a good salesperson to be. No matter how good the equipment is, if the sales person is not friendly, dependable and reliable, there will be problems. I like the company, and all the people at Norland are very nice.

An Interview with Fran McCauley of Dowser Spring Water Company

“I felt as if Norland has the best all around water bottling line. It takes up a very small footprint, is easy to work on, and a lot of the parts are readily available at the local level”, reported Fran McCauley when we talked with him about his bottled water business. Mr. McCauley is Operations Manager of Dowser Spring Water Company, a very successful bottler of all natural, unprocessed spring water in the great state of New York. Read below about Dowser Spring Water and how their business got started and has grown for nearly a decade.

1. Would you please tell us a little about yourself-family, friends, where you grew up, and hobbies, etc?

A: I’ve been in the beverage business for 30 years, married for 20, have a daughter who is 18, and twin boys who are 16. I enjoy racing, hunting and fishing. I live in small country town in Orange County New York called Pine Bush and have a lot of great friends.

2. How many years have you been in the water bottling business and how did you decide to get into this business?

A: It’s been about 8 years in the water end of the business. The President of our company was always in the single serve part of the industry, and decided that he wanted to get into the home and office end, so eventually he bought out an existing business and it’s been great since the start.

3. How did you find out about Norland International and how did you decide to go with Norland’s equipment?

A: I guess it was about 6 years ago a colleague and I flew out to Las Vegas for an IBWA show; our main objective was to look at a new bottling line. I felt as if Norland had the best all around line there. It took up a very small footprint, was easy to work on, and a lot of the parts were readily available at the local level. They also promised great service before-during-and-after.

4. Norland’s equipment is made with the operators in mind. How did you find the learning curve for you and your employees?

A: That may have been the best part of all. With no experience prior we were up and running immediately, Norlands staff stayed with us for a couple of days and that’s all it took.

5. You are using a Norland Triton 450 and Norland RackStacker in your operations. How has the Norland systems been operating for you and what bottle sizes are produced? What volumes? How have they helped you in your operations?

A: I got to tell you this machine has run great from day one, don’t get me wrong we’ve had a few normal repairs due to wear over time, but no out of the ordinary break downs. We fill 3&5 gallon bottles. This machine and the RackStacker have taken my production time down 55%. I don’t worry about a worker getting a hurt back anymore with the RackStacker, and I can literally run this machine by myself in half the time that it took 4 employees with our old line.

6. How has the “after the sale” service that Norland has provided you with been? Do you get answers to your questions in a timely fashion?

A: Well it’s been 6 years and the service is still outstanding. They have a fantastic staff and lets face it were all in a service business, and that’s a big part of staying in business!

7. Daren “Big D” Waters is your personal contact with Norland. How has your experience been thus far with Big D?

A: Big D was a huge reason we went with Norland after viewing all the different manufacturers and talking to their sales people. Big D was easy to talk to, no pressure and he spoke plain. He found out what your needs were left a little room for growth and it was a done deal. No regrets to this day.

Triton450 Bottle Washer, Filler and Capper

The Norland Triton450™ is one of the most advanced large-bottle systems on the market in its class. This advanced system automatically washes, sanitize, rinses, fills and caps up to 450 of 3-to-5-gallon (11-to-19-liter) bottles per hour with only minimal operator intervention. The Triton450 processes virtually any style / size large bottle one right after the other - there's no need for hand sorting or equipment adjustments which can prove to be extremely time-consuming when using different diameter or different height bottles.

The Triton450 has been designed for ease of operation and highest efficiency. The system is constructed throughout using stainless steel piping which will provide longevity, durability, long and very low maintenance. In addition, the other wetted parts are constructed using FDA approved materials – either stainless steel or plastics.

The sophisticated Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) provides the plant operator or production manager quickly and easily the instantaneous production status and records. Advanced controls constantly sense the position of the bottles in the various locations for maximum reliability. If a fault is detected, the system alerts the operator to allow him to effortlessly recognize and remedy the situation. The operating status of the system is displayed on the stack (elevated) lighting panel which can usually be monitored from a remote location. This often allows the operator to accomplish other tasks in a different portion of the plant.  For more information on the Norland Triton450 and other Norland products, visit http://www.norlandintl.com/.
