An Interview with Fran McCauley of Dowser Spring Water Company

“I felt as if Norland has the best all around water bottling line. It takes up a very small footprint, is easy to work on, and a lot of the parts are readily available at the local level”, reported Fran McCauley when we talked with him about his bottled water business. Mr. McCauley is Operations Manager of Dowser Spring Water Company, a very successful bottler of all natural, unprocessed spring water in the great state of New York. Read below about Dowser Spring Water and how their business got started and has grown for nearly a decade.


1. Would you please tell us a little about yourself-family, friends, where you grew up, and hobbies, etc?

A: I’ve been in the beverage business for 30 years, married for 20, have a daughter who is 18, and twin boys who are 16. I enjoy racing, hunting and fishing. I live in small country town in Orange County New York called Pine Bush and have a lot of great friends.

2. How many years have you been in the water bottling business and how did you decide to get into this business?

A: It’s been about 8 years in the water end of the business. The President of our company was always in the single serve part of the industry, and decided that he wanted to get into the home and office end, so eventually he bought out an existing business and it’s been great since the start.

3. How did you find out about Norland International and how did you decide to go with Norland’s equipment?

A: I guess it was about 6 years ago a colleague and I flew out to Las Vegas for an IBWA show; our main objective was to look at a new bottling line. I felt as if Norland had the best all around line there. It took up a very small footprint, was easy to work on, and a lot of the parts were readily available at the local level. They also promised great service before-during-and-after.

4. Norland’s equipment is made with the operators in mind. How did you find the learning curve for you and your employees?


A: That may have been the best part of all. With no experience prior we were up and running immediately, Norlands staff stayed with us for a couple of days and that’s all it took.


5. You are using a Norland Triton 450 and Norland RackStacker in your operations. How has the Norland systems been operating for you and what bottle sizes are produced? What volumes? How have they helped you in your operations?

A: I got to tell you this machine has run great from day one, don’t get me wrong we’ve had a few normal repairs due to wear over time, but no out of the ordinary break downs. We fill 3&5 gallon bottles. This machine and the RackStacker have taken my production time down 55%. I don’t worry about a worker getting a hurt back anymore with the RackStacker, and I can literally run this machine by myself in half the time that it took 4 employees with our old line.

6. How has the “after the sale” service that Norland has provided you with been? Do you get answers to your questions in a timely fashion?



A: Well it’s been 6 years and the service is still outstanding. They have a fantastic staff and lets face it were all in a service business, and that’s a big part of staying in business!

7. Daren “Big D” Waters is your personal contact with Norland. How has your experience been thus far with Big D?

A: Big D was a huge reason we went with Norland after viewing all the different manufacturers and talking to their sales people. Big D was easy to talk to, no pressure and he spoke plain. He found out what your needs were left a little room for growth and it was a done deal. No regrets to this day.
