An Interview with Don Wood, President/CEO of Arrowhead Spring Water LTD

An Interview with Don Wood, President/CEO of Arrowhead Spring Water LTD

1. Would you please tell us a little about yourself-family, friends, where you grew up, and hobbies, etc?

I grew up in Southern Ontario, Canada then moved to the province of Alberta in my late teens. Then on to Vancouver, B.C. Canada... My hobbies are snow skiing and golf when ever possible. My wife's name is Parichat who is originally from Thailand. We have no children and I spend a lot time traveling.

2. How many years have you been in the water bottling business and how did you decide to get into this business?

I started in the bottled water business in 1989. Along with two partners, we started Coastal Mountain Water Company based in North Vancouver B.C. Canada. We were the second bottled water company in BC so the timing was great. We sold the company in February 1998. In 1999 I took a position with Nestle (Perrier Vittel) based in Bangkok, Thailand. This involved working in Vietnam and China as well for the Nestle Pure Life Brand. In October 2004, I returned to Canada and began working for Trojan Technologies in early 2005. I then took a position with Arrowhead Spring Water Ltd in early 2006. I was promoted to President / CEO in January 2007. All together, I have in excess of 20 years in the bottled water business

3. How did you find out about Norland International and how did you decide to go with Norland’s equipment?

Arrowhead purchased their first Norland RackStacker after seeing it displayed at the Pack Expo Show in Chicago, IL in early 2006. This unit went into our Calgary facility. A second Norland Rack Stacker machine was built for Arrowhead‘s Edmonton facility in early 2010. This unit was designed to rack both 18.9L polycarbonate bottles and the all-new innovative 15L single use PET bottles. Both systems are fantastic.

4. Norland’s equipment is made with the operators in mind. How did you find the learning curve for you and your employees?

Both Norland Rack Stackers included the proper training for our staff upon installation. The installations happened with out any problems. Norland staff worked hard during the startup process and we were running the new equipment the same day as the installation started.

5. You are using two Norland Rack Stackers in your operations. What were you doing before and how has the Rack Stackers improved your operation?

Prior to the installation of the Norland Rack Stackers, Arrowhead was hand loading the product into plastic racks. This is very demanding on the guys who loaded the bottles – the bottles are heavy and there was stooping and twisting involved in the loading process. Therefore, these units have greatly improved our bottling lines efficiencies while reducing labor requirements in both our Edmonton and Calgary facilities.

6. How has the “after the sale” service that Norland has provided you with been? Do you get answers to your questions in a timely fashion?

Norland’s staff has been great to work with. Our Plant Managers have had a few questions, which were handled right away by Norland staff members in a timely fashion.

7. Daren Waters was and still is your personal contact with Norland. How has your experience been thus far with Daren?

Daren has been fantastic to deal with. I highly recommend working with Daren and all the Norland staff.

A special thanks to Don Wood from Arrowhead Spring Water for taking the time to share his story with the Norland audience.
